A Journey to My Roots: Bastar, Chhattisgarh Exploring the Tribal Villages That Inspired Kauseyah Some journeys stay with you forever, and this was one of them. Though I'm South Indian by origin, I was brought up in Chhattisgarh, a land that has deeply shaped my heart and my creative journey. In March 2022, myself, my father and my mother travelled to the beautiful tribal villages of Bastar for my fashion research—a trip that would later become one of the strongest inspirations behind Kauseyah As we drove through endless green fields, dense Sal forests, and painted mud homes, it felt like stepping into another world. We stayed in a traditional mud house with a local family, sharing simple home-cooked meals and experiencing the warmth and generosity that defines the people of Bastar. Over the next few days, we visited villages including Chilkuti, Nangur, Badekawali, Bodara, Dhonki, and Milkuwada, meeting skilled tribal artisans who have preserved their crafts for generations. From the intricate Bastar bell metal art (Dhokra) to bamboo work, traditional jewellery, and handwoven textiles, every craft carried stories of heritage, patience, and identity. What touched me most wasn't just the craftsmanship—it was the people. Their simplicity, kindness, and deep respect for tradition reminded me that true design begins by listening, learning, and honouring the hands that create. Before returning home, we stood before the magnificent Chitrakote Waterfalls, often called the Niagara of India. Powerful, untamed, and breathtaking, it perfectly reflected the spirit of Bastar itself. This journey changed the way I see design. It taught me that every handcrafted piece carries a story, a culture, and generations of knowledge. Today, those experiences continue to inspire everything we create at Kauseyah, celebrating India's rich textile heritage and the incredible artisans who keep these traditions alive. Bastar isn't just a destination—it will always feel like home.
